RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware junior Joe McLister (at right) has been named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association men’s golf first team all-star squad, the league has announced.
McLister, a captain from Leesburg, VA (Loudoun County High School), was among 10 players honored on the first and second teams from a vote of the 11 league coaches. McLister becomes the first Delaware player to earn All-CAA honors since the Blue Hens joined the league in 2001-02.
The three-year standout has enjoyed another outstanding season in 2005-06, leading the squad with a stroke average of 72.96 and finishing as the team’s top performer in nine of the squad’s 11 tournaments this season. He also has led the nation for most of the season in par three scoring.
Delaware will close out the season this week with competition at the Wesley Invitational at Wild Quail Golf Club in Dover, DE April 20 and at its own Scotty Duncan Memorial Tournament at Back Creek Country Club in Middletown, DE April 22-23.
This past weekend, McLister placed 10th at the CAA Championships at Pinehurst, NC as he fired rounds of 76, 77, and 73 for a score of 226. His 10th place finish was the Hens’ first top 10 finish at the conference meet since 2001 as the Hens enjoyed their best team finish in five seasons in the CAA.
As of this week, McLister has played in 25 rounds and posted a stroke average of 72.96, including a low round of 67 at both Rutgers and James Madison this past fall. He has posted five rounds in the 60’s, shot higher than 76 just once, and broke par nine times. His stroke average is on pace to shatter the school single season record of 75.31 established by Peter Lovenguth in 1990-91. McLister already holds the school career stroke average record with a mark of 75.09.
McLister was joined the on the All-CAA first team by junior Jeff Castle of Towson, freshman Mark Haastrup of Georgia State, senior Mike Kirby of George Mason, and senior Keith Snyder of Drexel. The second team was made up of junior Jens Fahrbring of Virginia Commonwealth, junior Daniel Hurley of George Mason (McLister’s high school teammate), Scott Marino of James Madison, senior Steve Tiley of Georgia State, and freshman Matt Watson of Old Dominion.
Castle was named CAA Player of the Year, Haastrup was named Rookie of the Year, and Georgia State’s Matt Clark was named Coach of the Year. Georgia State captured the CAA team title this past weekend with Haastrup capturing individual medalist honors.
