Oakley,
Spiker Lead Blue Hen Golfers to Fourth
Place Finish at Lehigh
Date:
October 11, 2004
TELFORD,
PA -- Led by third place finishes from
senior Dan Spiker and junior J.J. Oakley,
the University of Delaware golf team
posted its best finish of the fall season
with a fourth place finish at the Don
Mershon Invitational hosted by Lehigh
University Sunday and Monday at Indian
Valley Country Club.
Spiker
shot 77 Sunday and 73 Monday and Oakley
fired a season-low 74 Sunday and 75 Monday
to finish at 150 and tie for third place
in the individual standings. The tandem
led the Blue Hens to a team score of 621
(313-308) to tie host Lehigh for fourth
place in the 15-team field. The fourth
place finish was the best for Delaware
since a second place finish at last
spring's Scotty Duncan Memorial
Tournament.
Siena took
the team title with a 36-hole score of 610
over the 6,859-yard, par 72 course, seven
strokes better than runners-up St. Francis
(PA) and Rider (617). Delaware and Lehigh
tied for fourth with a score of 621
followed by Bucknell, Fordham, Mt. St.
Mary's, Monmouth, Colgate, and
Ottawa.
Spiker and
Oakley tied Siena's Robby Bigley for third
place overall, the best finish by a UD
golfer this fall and the best since Steve
Banks placed second at last May's Scotty
Duncan Memorial. Oakley's finish was the
best of his career while Spiker's finish
matched his career best third place finish
at the John McDonald Classic hosted by
Temple Oct. 27-28, 2003.
Also for
the Blue Hens, Joe McLister placed 31st
(79-80=159), Britt Murdoch was 42nd
(83-79=162), and Mike Strasburg was 61st
(85-83=168).
Delaware
will return to action Oct. 17-18 at the
Goldey-Beacom Invitational at Hartefeld
Golf Club in Avondale, PA.
