Delaware
Golfers Move Up Three Space to Seventh
Place in Day Two of CAA Tournament; Spiker
Shoots Even Par 70 to Lead
Hens
DATE:
April 16, 2005
HOT
SPRINGS, VA -- Led by a blistering even
par 70 by senior Dan Spiker (right) and a
73 by sophomore Joe McLister, the
University of Delaware golf team moved up
three spaces into seventh place after the
second round of the Colonial Athletic
Association Golf Championships Saturday at
The Cascades Course at the Homestead
Resort.
Delaware,
which shot 322 Friday to find itself in
10th and last place, improved 16 shots
with a team score of 306 Saturday to move
into seventh place with a total score of
628 after 36 holes. The Blue Hens' jump
was the largest of any team in the
tournament by 12 strokes. The third and
final round will be held Sunday beginning
at 9:15 a.m. Delaware has never placed
higher than eighth in three seasons in the
CAA, including back-to-back ninth place
finishes in 2003 and 2004.
Spiker,
whose 19th place finish at the 2003 CAA
Tournament is the highest ever by a UD
player, bounced back from an 85 Friday to
shoot an even par 70 over the 6,679-yard
course Saturday and move into a tie for
26th place overall with a 155. Spiker's 70
was his best score ever in CAA Tournament
action and his second lowest round in his
career, just missing the 69 he fired at
the Towson Invitational March 28, 2004.
McLister,
Delaware's stroke average leader at 76.84,
followed a 79 Friday with a 73 Saturday to
move into a tie for 16th place at 152.
Also for
Delaware, senior Steve Banks shot a 79
Saturday and in 34th place at 161,
sophomore Josh Williamowsky, who shot a
team-best 76 Friday, shot an 87 Saturday
and is tied for 37th at 163, and freshman
Britt Murdoch shot an 84 Saturday and is
49th with a two-day score of 170.
Defending
champion UNC Wilmington shot a 292
Saturday to move past first day leader
Towson with a score of 590. James Madison
is second at 600 followed by Virginia
Commonwealth at 602, Towson at 605,
William & Mary at 606, Old Dominion at
616, Delaware at 628, George Mason at 630,
Drexel at 639, and Hofstra at 649.
James
Madison's Jairo Irreno remained in first
place individually as he followed Friday's
69 with a 71 Saturday to move his score to
140, two strokes better than UNC
Wilmington's Brian Joyce, who shot a 71
for the second consecutive round and is at
142. George Mason's Mike Kirby is third at
145 followed by defending champion Billy
Wingerd of Towson at 147.
The team
champion earns a berth in the upcoming
NCAA Tournament in June.
