Blue Hens Close Out Fall Season
With Strong Showing; McLister Falls in
Playoff
GALLOWAY, NJ - University of
Delaware freshman Joe McLister placed second and
junior Dan Spiker was third to lead the University of
Delaware golf team a second place team finish at John
McDonald Classic Tuesday at Galloway National Golf
Club.
McLister, a freshman from Leesburg, VA
(Loudoun County), followed a 76 Monday with a 73 on Tuesday
to finish at 149, tied for the individual title with
Loyola's Will Shriver, who shot rounds of 76 and 73. Shriver
won in a one-hole playoff to claim the individual
title.
Delaware shot a team score of 622, nine
stroke behind winner Loyola at 613 for the 36-hole
tournament. The event was held at the 6,374-yard, par 71
Galloway National GC. Host Temple was third at 623 followed
by Pennsylvania (632) and Connecticut (633) in the 11-team
field.
The Blue Hens, who closed our their fall
schedule, posted their fourth straight top five team finish
of the fall season and had their best finish since a second
place finish at the Wesley Fall Classic in
September.
McLister's second place finish was his
career best and marked the second straight tournament that a
Blue Hen golfer was the runner-up. Freshman Matt
Grobstein was second at the Hofstra Invitational Oct.
17-18.
Spiker (Poolesville/Poolesville, MD),
Delaware top finish at the Colonial Athletic Association
each of the last two seasons, posted his highest finish of
the fall with a third place finish as he shot 74 Monday and
77 Tuesday for a 151, just two strokes off the lead.
Spiker's finish gave Delaware two golfers in the top five
for the first time this season.
Also for the Hens, J.J. Oakley
placed 21st with a 78-81=159, Grobstein was 32nd at
83-80=163, and B.J. Jaworski was 50th with a score of
86-89=175.
