ANNAPOLIS, MD -- University of
Delaware sophomore J.J. Oakley fired the lowest round
by a Blue Hen golfer in over 20 years with a three-under par
68 Sunday to place sixth overall and lead UD to a 10th place
team finish at the Navy Fall Golf Invitational Sunday at the
6,611-yard U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club course.
Oakley, a native of Lewes, DE and a
graduate of Cape Henlopen High School, carded a 74 Saturday
followed by a career-best 68 Sunday to finish tied for sixth
place at 142. His 68 was the second lowest score ever
recorded for 18 holes by a UD player, matching a 68 shot by
Jim Kania at Newark (DE) Country Club on April 20, 1982.
Kevin Gallagher's 66 on May 3, 1987 at
Hog Neck Golf Club in Easton, MD is the school record.
Oakley's 68 was seven strokes better than his previous
collegiate career-low of 75 set last season.
Oakley's play led Delaware to a team
score of 595 and a 10th place finish in the 14-team field.
Georgetown won the tournament team title with a 36-hole
score of 565, outdistancing runner-up Towson by 24 strokes.
George Washington was third at 584 followed by Winthrop
(586), and host Navy (587).
Navy was led by the play of individual
medalist Billy Hurley, who followed a 69 Saturday with an
incredible 10-under par 61 Sunday to finish at 130, seven
strokes better than runner-up Nick Cook of Georgetown
(70-67=137) and Matt Johnson of Winthrop
(68-69=137).
Also for Delaware, junior Dan
Spiker (77-72=149) and freshman Joe McLister
(74-75=149) tied for 30th place, sophomore B.J. Jaworski
placed 60th (75-82=157), and freshman Tyler
Kupper was 62nd overall (78-80=158).
Delaware will return to action Sept. 29
at the Rehoboth Beach Fall (DE) Invitational hosted by
