Blue Hens Place 9th in Team Standings; Spiker Leads Delaware with 14th Place Finish

CENTER VALLEY, PA -- The University of Delaware placed ninth out of 24 teams at the Lafayette College Golf Invitational Saturday afternoon at Center Valley Golf Club.

After shooting a team score of 313 Friday to move into 12th place, Delaware improved five shots and finished with a team total of 621 Saturday to finish ninth overall, just two strokes behind eighth place Niagara. Binghamton won the team title with a score of 605, five strokes better than runner-up Siena. Fordham was third and Connecticut and Robert Morris tied for fourth place over the par 72, 6,772-yard course.

University of Delaware junior Dan Spiker led the Blue Hens with a 14th place finish as he carded a 151 over 36 holes, shooting scores of 76 on Friday and a three-over par 75 on Saturday.

Also for the Hens, J.J. Oakley, playing in his first tournament of the spring, placed 39th with a score of 156 on scores of 78 both days. Freshman Joe McLister shot 78 Saturday to finish 54th at 158, Chase Miller fired an 80 Saturday to place 59th overall, and Steve Banks followed an 86 Friday with a 77 Saturday to tie for 83rd at 163.

Team champion Binghamton, a member of the America East conference, placed three golfers in the top 10 led by individual champion Keith Hendrickson, who shot a two-under par 142 for the tournament, firing scores of 72 Friday and 70 Saturday. St. Francis (PA) golfer Eric Couture was second at 72-71=143 while four golfers tied for third at 146.

Delaware will compete at the Colonial Athletic Association championships Apr. 16-18 at Nansemond River Golf Club in Suffolk, VA.
