Blue Hens Take Second Place in Season Finale; Banks Second Overall

MIDDLETOWN, DE -- The University of Delaware men's golf team posted its best tournament finish of the spring Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens placed second in the team standings as hosts of the Scotty Duncan Memorial Golf Tournament at Back Creek Golf Club.

Blue Hen junior Steve Banks (Freehold Township/Freehold, NJ) placed second overall, the highest finish of the spring for any UD player, by shooting a 72 Saturday and a 76 Sunday for a score of 148, just two strokes off the winning score. The tournament was the final action of the 2003-04 season for the Blue Hens.

Temple, led by individual champion Pat O'Neill, took the team title with a two-day, 36-hole total of 602 over the 7,003-yard, par 71 course. Delaware was 12 strokes off in second place at 614 followed by Longwood (VA), Saint Joseph's, and Villanova in the 10-team field. Delaware's team finish was the best since placing second at the Temple Invitational back in October.

Banks' second place finish was the best for a Blue Hen player this season, matching a second place finish by freshman Joe McLister (Loudoun Country/Leesburg, VA - at right) at the Temple Invitational and a second place finish by freshman Matt Grobstein at the Hofstra Invitational during the fall season.

Delaware placed three golfers in the top 10. In addition to Banks, McLister tied for fourth place at 151 (77-74), and defending tournament champion Dan Spiker (Poolesville/Poolesville, MD) was 10th overall at 154 (72-82).

Also for the Hens, J.J. Oakley was 29th (76-88=164), Tyler Kupper placed 34th (83-82=165), Tim Rech was 36th (76-90=166), Devin Milowe was 45th (85-85=170), and B.J. Jaworski was 47th (88-83=171). A total of 54 golfers competed.

O'Neill won the individual title by shooting a tournament low 70 Saturday and 76 Sunday for a 146, two strokes better than Banks. Longwood's Trey Deal was third with a 150 (74-76) while McLister led a three-way tie at fourth place at 151.
