WESTOVER, MD - The University of Delaware men's
golf team opened up its spring season by placing 18th at the
Drew Upton Invitational hosted by Towson University Saturday
and Sunday at Great Hope Golf Course.
The Blue Hens placed 18th out of 21 teams with 628 points
in the two-day, 36-hole event. Loyola captured team honors
with a two-day total of two-over par 578, two strokes ahead
of runne-up Navy (580) and three better than Army (581).
Binghamton and host Towson rounded out the top five.
Senior co-captain Jason Phinney (Milton/Milton,
MA) led the Blue Hens with a two-day total of 76-76=152 to
tie for 38th place.
Also for Delaware, sophomore Mike Hoffman
(Prospec/Mt. Prospect, IL) was 67th at 75-82=157,
freshman Robert Ellrich (St. Paul's/Timonium, MD) was
82nd (81-79=160), sophomore Jerry Newell
(Salesianum/Wilmington, DE) was 92nd at 79-83=162, while
freshman Matt Marron (Malvern/Exton, PA) was 100th at
85-80=165.
Billy Hurley of Navy took individual top honors with
two-day total of five-under 139, including a 68 on Sunday.
Colgate's Jesse Smith was second at 72-68=140. Three Loyola
played finished in the top 10.
Delaware, which competed for the first time since
October, resume action this week at the U.S. Naval Academy
Invitational in Annapolis, MD.
