 Blue Hens Place Eighth Overall; Spiker Leads Hens

 

GLEN ALLEN, VA -- The University of Delaware shot a team total of 312 in Sunday's rainy final round as the Blue Hens placed eighth overall at the Colonial Athletic Association Golf Championships at The Crossings Golf Club.

The Blue Hens shot a three-day total of 924 to place eighth in the 10-team field, 29 shots behind seventh place George Mason. Virginia Commonwealth shot a tournament record 21 under par 843 to capture its seventh straight CAA team title. UNC Wilmington was 13 strokes back at 856 followed by William & Mary, James Madison, Old Dominion, Towson, George Mason, Delaware, Hofstra, and Drexel.

Delaware finished out of the top five in a conference tournament for the first time since the 1964-65 season.

The Blue Hens were led by freshman Dan Spiker (Poolesville/Poolesville, MD) who shot a six over par 72 Sunday to finish tied for 28th overall with a three-round score of 225.

Also for the Hens, senior senior Jason Phinney (Milton/Milton, MA) shot 79 Sunday to finish tied for 37th (231), sophomore Mike Hoffman (Prospect/Mt. Prospect, IL) shot a team-low 77 Sunday to finish tied for 41st (236), junior Jacob Korb (Council Rock/Newtown, PA) shot 78 to finish tied for 43rd (237), and senior Terry Maguire (Cornwall/Cornwall, NY) shot 82 to finish 48th (243).

VCU junior Ted Brown led from start to finish to capture the individual title with a CAA record three-day score of 204, 12 under par over the 6,674-yard course. He shattered the previous mark of four under. James Madison's Jay Woodson was second at 209 while VCU's Ryan Zylstra was third at 210.

Delaware will continue action next weekend when the Blue Hens host the Scotty Duncan Memorial at Frog Hollow Golf Club in Middletown, DE.
