 Spiker Shoots 72, Hens Drop Back Into Eighth Place

 

GLEN ALLEN, VA -- The University of Delaware men's golf team slid back one spot into eighth place in the team standings after second round action at the Colonial Athletic Association Golf Championships Saturday at The Crossings Golf Club.

The Blue Hens, who shot a team score of 302 Friday to place seventh, fired a team score of 310 Saturday for a two-day total of 612 to put them in eighth place. The third and final round of the 54-hole tournament will begin Sunday at 7:20 a.m.

First round leader and six-time defending champion Virginia Commonwealth set yet another tournament record with a team total of 276 Saturday to stay in the lead with a 555. VCU had set a tournament record with a 279 team score Friday but broke that Saturday along with the tournament two-round record.

VCU's Ted Brown maintained the first round lead by shooting an eight-under 64 over the 6,674-yard course. Brown's score set a course record and tied the CAA single round mark of 64 by James Madison's Scott Polen in 2000.

UNC Wilmington is second in the team standings, nine strokes behind VCU, while James Madison is third followed by Towson and William & Mary in fourth, Old Dominion, George Mason, Delaware, and Drexel. A tournament record six teams are at even par or better.

Leading the Blue Hens in the second round was Dan Spiker who fired an even par 72 to tie for 23rd place with a 36-hole total of 147. Jason Phinney is 34th after firing a 76 Saturday while Jacob Korb (84) and Mike Hoffman (83) are tied for 42nd place, and Terry Maguire (79) is tied for 45th place.
