CENTER VALLEY, PA -- The
University of Delaware men's golf team closed out the 2001
fall season with a seventh place finish at the Stabler
Invitational hosted by Lehigh University Saturday at Center
Valley Golf Club.
The Blue Hens, who will resume the spring
season in March, posted their second best finish of the
season as they placed seventh with a two-day, 36-hole team
score of 614 out of 20 teams.
Host Lehigh easily won the team title
with a two-day total of 583, 12 strokes better than
runners-up Pennsylvania, Princeton, Temple, and St.
Bonaventure at 595. Iona was sixth at 609 followed by
Delaware (614), George Washington (616), Bucknell (617), and
UMBC (620). Delaware shot a first day total of 302 to place
fifth but shot a 312 on Saturday.
Sophomore Jerry Newell led the
Blue Hens with a 20th place finish, firing scores of 72 on
Friday and 79 on Saturday for a 151 over the 6,500-yard,
par-72 course. Newell's 72 was the lowest score by a Blue
Hen player this fall.
Also for the Hens, junior Terry
Maguire (75-77=152) and freshman Daniel Spiker
(74-78) placed tied for 26th while freshmen Jacob
Korb (83-78=161) and Matt Marron (81-80=161) tied
for 70th place.
Lehigh's Bowen Osborn won the individual
title as he fired scores of 69 and 70 for a four-under par
139, besting runner-ups Mike Eglit of Lehigh and James Milam
of Princeton by four shots. Eglit's 68 on Saturday was the
best score of the tournament.
