ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The University of
Delaware golf team tied its best finish of the season,
placing sixth at the United States Naval Academy
Invitational Sunday at the USNA Golf Club.
Delaware junior Terry Maguire
(Cornwall/Cornwall, NY) placed third overall as he shot
72-74=146 over 36 holes to lead the Blue Hens to a team
score of 611 to tie Lehigh University in the team standings.
The Blue Hens also placed sixth at the Delaware Collegiate
Invitational back on Oct. 21-22.
Georgetown took the team title with 593
points, outdistancing Princeton (600), host Navy (603),
Villanova (605), and Iona (610) in the 14-team
field.
Maguire's score of par 72 Saturday over
the 6,611-yard course was the second best of his career and
the lowest by a Delaware golfer this season. The score of 72
is the best for a UD golfer since Maguire fired a 71 in the
first day of the Stabler Invitational at Lehigh Oct. 15,
1999.
Also for the Blue Hens, freshman Mike
Hoffman (Prospect/Mt. Prospect, IL) placed 20th
(75-78=153), junior Jason Phinney (Milton/Milton, MA)
was 39th (80-77=157), freshman Jerry Newell
(Salesianum/Wilmington, DE) was 43rd (77-81=158), and junior
Cory Sheldon (Newark/Newark, DE) was 66th
(77-88-165).
Princeton's Nat Hoopes won the individual
title as he shot a two-day total of 68-77=145 and defeated
Georgetown's Nick Cook (71-74=145) in a one-hole playoff.
Maguire tied for third with Navy's Brian Crum and
Villanova's Brian Hickey.
Delaware will continue action April 20-21
when the Blue Hens serve as hosts of the Scotty Duncan
Memorial Invitational at Hogs Neck Golf Club in Easton,
MD.
