WILLIAMSBURG, VA - The
University of Delaware golf team placed 15th overall at the
Golden Horseshoe Collegiate Golf Invitational Tuesday at
William & Mary's Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.
Delaware shot a two-day, 36-hole total of
330-330=660 to place 15th in the 18-team field. Richmond was
the runaway winner with a two-day total of 592, 12 strokes
better than host William & Mary at 604. Liberty placed
third while George Mason was fourth and Rutgers and UMBC
tied for fifth place.
Delaware's America East rivals Towson and
Drexel placed 12th and 17th respectively.
Jason Phinney led the Blue Hens
with a 36th place finish as he shot 80 Monday and 79 Tuesday
for a two-day score of 159. Also for Delaware, Cory
Sheldon placed 64th at 86-80=166, Terry Maguire
was 73rd at 87-82=169, and Mike Hoffman (82-89) and
Jerry Newell (82-89) tied for 75th place with scores
of 171.
Richmond golfers finished in the first
three spots as Joe Horowitz won the event with a score of
70-72=142 over the 7,120-yard, par 72 layout. Spider
teammate Mark Digiacomo was second at 71-74=145 and Bryan
Stark was third at 77-71=148.
Delaware will continue play next Monday
at the Towson Invitational.
