Blue Hens Place 14th Overall; Iona Wins Team Title

Terry Maguire was the Hens' top finisher for the third straight tournament

EASTON, MD -- The University of Delaware men's golf team placed 14th in the team standings at the second and final day of the Scotty Duncan Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday at Hog Neck Golf Club.

Iona overtook Rutgers with a second day team total of 311 to take the title with a score of 615, downing Rutgers by one stroke. Villanova was third at 628 followed by Loyola (630) and American (631) in the 15-team field. Delaware had a team score of 671 to place 14th, 21 strokes ahead of last place Manhattan at 692.

Delaware junior Terry Maguire, the tournament's defending individual champion who was in seventh place with a 76 after Friday's round, shot an 87 Saturday to finish at 163 and place 35th overall to lead the Blue Hens.

Also for Delaware, freshman Mike Hoffman was 47th (81-85=163), Cory Sheldon was 60th (83-87=166), Jerry Newell was 66th (86-86=172), and Matt Weber was 71st (86-91).

Ben Schubert of Loyola shot a two-under 70 over the 7,097-yard course Saturday, the best score of the tournament, to finish at 146 and claim the individual title. First day leader Kevin Campana of Rutgers placed second after shooting 71-77=148. Iona's Mark LeVeck was third at 76-74=150 followed by Rutger's Ryan MacDonald (74-77=151) and Drexel's Tom Clark (77-75=152).

The tournament is named in honor of the late R.B. "Scotty" Duncan, the University of Delaware's longtime golf coach and associate director of athletics who founded the tournament.
