CRISFIELD, MD - The University of
Delaware moved up in the standings for the second straight
day and finished third overall after the final round of the
America East Golf Championships Tuesday at Great Hope Golf
Club.
Hartford won the team title and the
automatic NCAA Tournament berth with a three-day team total
of 900, well in front of two-time defending champion Towson
(936) and Delaware (942). Hofstra was fourth followed by
Drexel, Vermont, Maine, and Boston University in the eight
-team field.
Delaware, which placed third for the
third time in the last four years, placed three golfers in
the top 15 and had all five golfers place in the top 30.
Delaware was sixth after the first round before moving up to
fourth Monday.
Freshman Mike Hoffman
(Prospect/Mt. Pleasant, IL) led the Blue Hens with a ninth
place finish, carding scores of 80-74-78 over the 7,047-yard
par 72 course.
Junior Terry Maguire
(Cornwall/Cornwall, NY), who placed 18th a year ago,
placed tied for 12th at 83-72-78=233 while junior Cory
Sheldon (Newark/Newark, DE) tied for 15th with a score
of 80-77-78=235.
Also for the Blue Hens, freshman Jerry
Newell (Salesianum/Wilmington, DE) placed tied for 25th
with a score of 80-85-79=244 while junior Jason
Phinney (Milton/Milton, MA) was 30th with a score of
84-83-79=246.
Hartford, which placed all five of its
players in the top seven, had the tournament's individual
medalist as Jeff Campbell led from start to finish, carding
a five over par score of 74-71-76=221 to finish six strokes
ahead of teammate Miroslay Holub and Towson's Josh Upton
(both at 227). Defending champion Greg Cote of Towson placed
tied for fifth at 230.
