Delaware vs. West Chester Sept. 19, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. W 42-21
Sophomore quarterback Matt Nagy came off
the bench to throw for 210 yards and two second
half touchdowns and the University of Delaware took
advantage of five turnovers as the Blue Hens
defeated West Chester (Pa.) 42-21 Saturday in a
non-league football game at Delaware Stadium. The
Blue Hens, ranked No. 9 (Sports Network) in the
nation in NCAA I-AA, defeated the Division II Rams
(1-2), who were playing their third straight Top 20
opponent, for the sixth straight tim in the series
Nagy, who shares the quarterback duties with junior
Brian Ginn and threw for 233 yards in last
week's loss to Villanova, wasn't even expected to
play Saturday after losing 11 pounds after missing
most of the week with tonsillitis. But when Ginn
went down with a season ending broken leg in the
first quarter, Nagy took over. Nagy's one-yard
touchdown run gave the Hens a 17-7 lead going into
halftime. After Delaware's Garon Sizemore
opened the second half with his second field goal
of the game, West Chester cut the lead to 20-14 on
a 20-yard pass from Mike Mitros (22 of 36 for 213
yards) to Kevin Ingram (10-106) with 9:25 left in
the third quarter. But Andre Thompson
followed with a six-yard touchdown run five minutes
later and Nagy hooked up with tight end Jason
VanKerkhoven on a 24-yard scoring toss and
added a 25-yard scoring pass to Eddie Conti
to ice the game for the Blue Hens. Sophomore
Derrick Downs led 512-yard total offense
attack by Delaware by running for 105 yards on just
six carries. Conti caught five passes for 107
yards. Mike Furline and Dale
Koscielski had interceptions for the Hens.
