NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware football head coach K.C. Keeler announced Friday that offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca has resigned to join the staff at Rutgers University and that current staff members Brian Ginn (at right) and Damian Wroblewski have earned promotions.
Ciarrocca, who served on the UD staff as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since Keeler’s first season in 2002, will become wide receivers coach at Rutgers for head coach Greg Schiano.
Ginn, who has served as running backs and wide receivers coach and whose eight-year tenure at UD is the longest among staff members, has been promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach while Wroblewski, who joined the staff last season as offensive line coach, has been promoted to assistant head coach and run game coordinator. Keeler also expects to make additional title changes within the staff and announce the addition of two new staff members in the coming weeks.
“I’m very thankful to the administration here at Delaware for doing everything in their power to keep Kirk here,” said Keeler, who has posted a six-year record of 52-26 at Delaware and led the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including winning the 2003 NCAA I-AA title. “Kirk turned down some other Division I offers to stay, but Rutgers is a great fit for him. We were fortunate to have him for six years. He did a tremendous job here but we are excited about his new opportunity.”
Ciarrocca played a big part in helping Delaware rank among the top offensive units in the country over the last six seasons and developing All-American quarterbacks Andy Hall and Joe Flacco. Hall was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004 and Flacco is one of the top quarterback prospects in the upcoming National Football League draft.
This past season, the Blue Hens led the Colonial Athletic Association in passing offense (289.5 yards per game, 11th in the nation), total offense (460.6, sixth), and scoring offense (36.2 points per game, 11th). Delaware ranked in the top half of the conference in scoring and passing offense four of his six years and in the top five in total offense five times in six seasons.
Ginn, 30, a four-year standout at quarterback, the 1999 team captain, and a 2000 graduate of Delaware, joined the Blue Hen staff as a graduate assistant in 2000, moved to receivers coach in 2001, and served as running backs coach from 2002 until 2005. He moved back to receivers coach in 2006 and has played a big part in Delaware annually ranking among the top offensive units in the country.
This past season, Delaware led the CAA and ranked No. 11 nationally in passing offense at 289.5 yards per game. Junior Aaron Love earned All-American honors in 2007 when he caught 73 passes for 1,009 yards while Mark Duncan caught 70 passes for 916 yards and six touchdowns and Kervin Michaud hauled in 52 passes for 682 yards and three touchdowns.
Wroblewski, 31, a 1999 graduate of Lafayette College, began his first season with the Blue Hens this past fall and guided one of the league’s most formidable offensive line units that was led by consensus first team All-American tackle Mike Byrne, All-American center Kheon Hendricks, and All-CAA guard Rich Beverley. Prior to coming to Delaware, Wroblewski coached at Bryant College (1999-2001), Pennsylvania (2002-03), Hofstra (2004-05), and Stony Brook (2006). He will continue to serve as Delaware’s recruiting coordinator.
“In my six years with Brian, I’ve always thought that he would be an outstanding coordinator,” said Keeler. “Kirk did a great job preparing him. Brian is very bright and has a great feel for what we do and does a great job working with our players. We are excited about having him take over his new role. Damian brings so much to the table and this promotion adds to the respect he deserves. I really see the offense as a collaborative effort among the staff and they bring this together.”
Delaware will open pre-season practice March 15 with the annual Blue-White Spring scrimmage set for April 19.
The Blue Hens will return 13 players with starting experience on offense and 12 on defense from last year’s team that went 11-4, advanced to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision title game, and earned the Lambert Cup Trophy and ECAC Team of the Year Award as the top team in the East.
