 NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware, which posted one of its biggest victories in school history with a 59-52 upset win over host Navy Saturday in Annapolis, MD, continued to move up in the national NCAA Football Championships Subdivision polls, improving to No. 7 in The Sports Network and Collegiate Commissioner’s Association/American Football Coaches Association Top 25 polls Monday.
The Blue Hens (7-1), who defeated Navy for the second time in the last three meetings, will take on No. 12 James Madison this Saturday at 12 noon at 22,000-seat Delaware Stadium. The game, which is sold out, will be televised live throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region on Comcast SportsNet. The Dukes (6-2) had a six-game win streak snapped in a 17-16 loss to Richmond last Saturday. Both Delaware and James Madison bring 4-1 Colonial Athletic Association records into the contest.
Delaware also moved up two spots to No. 3 in this week’s Lambert Cup Eastern poll. A total of seven CAA teams - Massachusetts, Delaware, New Hampshire, Richmond, James Madison, Hofstra, and Villanova - appeared in both polls. Last week, Delaware was ranked No. 9 by The Sports Network and No. 8 by the CCA/AFCA.
Northern Iowa maintained the top spot in The Sports Network poll, earning 59 of the 112 first place votes and 2,558 points, while North Dakota State remained at the top spot in the CCA/AFCA poll, earning
North Dakota State was No. 2 in the TSN poll with 37 first place votes and 2,456 points followed by Massachusetts (6/2,330), Montana (7/2,300), McNeese State (3/2,272), Southern Illinois, Delaware, New Hampshire, Appalachian State, and Wofford in the Top 10. Richmond was 11th followed by James Madison, Delaware State, Elon, Yale, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Southern, Grambling, Western Illinois, Hofstra, Alabama A&M, Youngstown State, Villanova, Eastern Washington, and Nicholls State.
Northern Iowa was at No. 2 in the CCA/AFCA poll with six first place votes and 665 points followed by Montana (4/631), Massachusetts (2/626), McNeese State, Southern Illinois, Delaware, New Hampshire, Appalachian State, Wofford, Richmond, James Madison, Delaware State, Yale, Elon, Eastern Kentucky, Grambling, Georgia Southern, Western Illinois, Hofstra, Eastern Illinois, Alabama A&M, Youngstown State, Nicholls State, and Villanova.
The Sports Network poll is selected by a panel of sports information directors, sportswriters, and broadcasters who cover NCAA Division I FCS football. The CCA/AFCA poll consists of conference commissioner’s and head coaches.
In the Lambert Cup Eastern rankings, Massachusetts was No. 1 with 80 points followed by New Hampshire, Delaware, Yale, Richmond, James Madison, Fordham, Holy Cross, Hofstra, and Harvard.
The Lambert Cup poll includes voting from sportswriters and broadcasters in the East with the overall champion being named during the final poll in January. The top rated team is recognized at the annual ECAC football awards dinner in February.
