Delaware Wins Fifth Straight With 20-19
Comeback Victory At
Hofstra

quarter comeback as the third-ranked
Delaware football team defeated Hofstra,
20-19, Saturday afternoon at J.M. Shuart
Stadium.
The
Blue Hens, who won their fifth straight to
improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the
Atlantic 10, trailed 19-7 with two minutes
remaining in the third quarter after
Hofstra kicker Chris Onorato nailed a
30-yard field goal. However Delaware
senior Sidney Haugabrook ignited the
comeback by returning the ensuing kickoff
60 yards before stepping out of bounds at
the Hofstra 33 yard line.
Delaware
had a third and 18 at the Hofstra 41 when
Riccio found David Boler for a 28-yard
gain to the Hofstra 13 on the final play
of the quarter, and four plays later
Niquan Lee scored from one yard out to cut
the Pride lead to 19-14 with 13:23
remaining in the game.
The
Blue Hens were stopped on their next
drive, and on their following possession
Riccio was intercepted by Prentice James
at the Hofstra seven yard line. However,
the Delaware defense held the Pride to a
three-and-out and on the punt Haugabrook
was interfered with, giving the Blue Hens
the ball on the Hofstra 37 with 8:59 to
play.
An
11-yard completion from Riccio to Justin
Long on a third down gave Delaware a first
and goal at the seven, and three plays
later Riccio hit Bleymaier in the end zone
to give the Blue Hens their first lead of
the game at the 6:09 mark. Delaware missed
the two-point conversion attempt, but the
Blue Hen defense would shut down the Pride
offense the rest of the way to preserve
the victory.
Following
the touchdown Hofstra could only move the
ball six yards before punting, but after
stopping Delaware, the Pride had one final
drive. On fourth and two from the Hofstra
44, Pride quarterback hit Devale Ellis,
but Ellis was tackled a half yard short of
the first down by Mark Moore with 1:01
left, and the Blue Hens ran out the
clock.
Delaware
is now 7-1-1 in its last nine meetings
with Hofstra, which fell to 3-3 overall
and 1-2 in the Atlantic 10 this
season.
Onorato,
who tied a school record by hitting four
field goals, capped a seven-play, 33-yard
drive to open the game with a 42-yard
field goal, and with 13:22 remaining in
the second quarter Onorato nailed a
37-yarder to put the Pride up 6-0. Hofstra
drove to the Blue Hen one yard line before
settling for an 18-yard field goal by
Onorato with 5:32 left in the first half,
but Rashaad Woodard returned the ensuing
kickoff 69 yards to the Hofstra 14. Lee,
who has now rushed four six touchdowns
over the last two games, then ran 11 yards
to the three and scored on the next play
to cut the Pride lead to 9-7 at the
half.
Neither
team could muster much offense early in
the third quarter, and the Blue Hens were
forced to punt from their own end zone on
their second possession. However punter
Mike Weber fumbled the snap, and Justyn
Davis recovered in the end zone to give
Hofstra a 16-7 advantage with 7:33
remaining in the period.
After
holding Delaware to a three-and-out, the
Pride then drove 39 yards on 10 plays,
capped by a 30-yard field goal by Onorato,
to go up 12 before Haugabrook started the
Blue Hen comeback with his long kickoff
return.
Riccio
finished 18-for-34 for 166 yards passing,
while Long and Lonnie Starks each caught
five passes for 70 and 20 yards,
respectively. David Boler made three
catches for 42 yards, posting his 100th
career catch and recording a reception in
25 straight games. Lee led the Blue Hen
ground attack with 20 rushes for 56 yards
and the two touchdowns, while Starks
rushed seven times for 19 yards. Mondoe
Davis led the Delaware defense with a
team-high 12 tackles and an interception,
while Moore added 10 tackles and Kyle
Campbell also picked off a
pass.
Hofstra
quarterback Anton Clarkson went 13-for-31
for 88 yards, while starter Bobby Seck was
7-for-10 before leaving early in the game
with a knee injury. Terry Crenshaw ran 16
times for 65 yards and caught a team-high
five passes for 24 yards.
"Our
defense definitely kept us in the ballgame
today," Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler
said. "After their touchdown on the
fumbled punt most teams would have folded,
but not this team. We have a lot of heart,
and the bottom line is that we got the job
done."
"Hofstra
made some mistakes, but we earned this
win. We played hard, and when you play
hard every snap, good things usually
happen. We expect every game to be like
this the rest of the year. We are equal in
talent to almost everybody, but our kids
have the belief that they will get the job
done in the end."
