among media and coaches...third of three
Mulhern brothers who have been standout
linebackers and team captains at
Delaware...intelligent player with great
instincts and a nose for the ball...style
is similar to older brother Dan who earned
consensus All-American honors for the Blue
Hens in 2002...has missed just one game
over two seasons and started 17
contests...has recorded 129 tackles (64
solo) and 12 tackles for loss...also has
broken up seven passes...
2003:
Enjoyed an outstanding season as a
first-year starter at outside linebacker
as a sophomore...contributed to defense
that allowed just 15.4 points per game
(No. 5 in I-AA) and shut out Colgate 40-0
in I-AA title game...played and started in
15 games, missing only the Maine game Nov.
1 after pulling a hamstring vs.
Navy...when he missed the Maine game, it
marked the first time any of the three
Mulhern brothers ever missed a game at UD,
snapping a streak of 117 straight
appearances...second on the team in
tackles with 101 (50 solo)...became just
the 19th player in UD history to record
100 or more tackles in a
season...collected seven or more tackles
nine times during the season, including a
career-high nine stops each vs. Hofstra,
New Hampshire, and in NCAA semifinal win
over Wofford...also had eight tackles vs.
Richmond, Massachusetts, and in I-AA
championship win over Colgate...ranked
third on team with 10.5 tackles for loss
for 20 yards, had one sack, broke up five
passes, and tied for team and Atlantic 10
lead with three fumble
recov-eries...intercepted first career
pass deep in Delaware territory to prevent
touchdown vs. Navy and also recovered a
fumble in the same game...had a sack and
three tackles for loss among his nine
tackles vs. Hofstra to earn Atlantic 10
Conference Defensive Player of the Week
and Blue Hen Touchdown Club Defensive
Player of the Week honors...recovered a
fumble in NCAA first round playoff win
over Southern Illinois...led all defenders
in the spring game with 10
tackles...
2002:
Did not see significant action early in
the season but came on at mid-season and
was key part of the linebacker
unit...appeared in all 12 games and earned
starts in final two contests of the season
at Maine and vs. Villanova...started those
two games next to brother Dan, who played
at middle linebacker...also played special
teams...ranked 13th on the squad and first
among non full-time starters with 28
tackles (14 solo)...also had 1.5 tackles
for loss and two pass breakups...posted
five or more tackles in three games led by
a career-high seven-tackle day in first
career start in win over No. 5 ranked
Maine...had four solo stops and broke up a
pass vs. the Black Bears...followed with
three tackles, including a tackle for loss
and a pass breakup vs. Villanova...also
recorded five tackles each vs. West
Chester and James Madison...
2001:
Did not see action and retained
freshman eligibility...
High
School Honors: Enjoyed outstanding
career at Strath-Haven High School under
head coach Kevin Clancy where he was a
teammate of current Blue Hen center Chris
Edwards...standout fullback and linebacker
and a three-year starter who led
Strath-Haven to combined record of 43-1,
three Central League and District One
titles, and state AAA titles in 1999 and
2000...team captain as a senior when team
went 15-0 and won second straight state
title...two-time first team All-State,
first team All-Delaware County, and first
team All-Central League selection at
linebacker as a junior and
senior...nominated for Big 33 game...as a
senior carried 193 times for 1,190 yards
and 18 touchdowns...

John Mulhern...born July 28, 1983...son of
Brian and Anne Mulhern...history major at
Delaware...works with father's and brother
Pat's construction companies during the
summer...one of seven children..third
member of family to earn football
scholarship to Delaware, joining brothers
Pat (Delaware '95) and Dan (Delaware
'03)...Pat was an All-Atlantic 10
linebacker and defensive end who was
captain of the 1994 UD team and Dan was an
All-American as captain in 2002...father,
Brian, was an All-American football player
at rival West Chester (PA)
University....sister, Kate, played field
hockey and lacrosse at West
Chester.
