#3 Delaware 48, #4 Southern Illinois 7 NCAA I-AA 1st Round • November 29, 2003 Blue Hens Take Advantage of SIU Turnovers for NCAA I-AA Win Complete Game Statistics Andy Hall (12) threw two touchdown passes and set a UD single season completion record in Blue Hens' playoff win NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware took advantage of six Southern Illinois turnovers, turned a blocked punt into a touchdown, and used 27 first quarter points on the way to a 48-7 victory in the opening round of the NCAA I-AA football playoffs Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium. The No. 2 seed and third-ranked Blue Hens (12-1), playing in their first NCAA playoff game since advancing to the semifinals in 2000, put the game away quickly, scoring twice in the first seven minutes and jumping out to a 34-0 halftime lead on the way to the suprisingly easy victory. No. 4 ranked Southern Illinois, making its first post-season appearance since capturing the 1983 I-AA national title, finished its season at 10-2. The Salukis were the Gateway Conference co-champions. Delaware, the Atlantic 10 Conference co-champion, advances to the I-AA quarterfinals where the Hens will host the winner of Saturday night's Northern Iowa vs. Montana State game. The turnovers were the key to the game as both teams managed 20 first downs and the Hens held a slim 340-303 advantage in total yards. But Delaware, which intercepted two passes and recovered fumbles, turned four of the miscues into touchdowns and never looked back. "We made some things happen in the first half," said Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler, who led Rowan to a 21-7 NCAA III playoff record during his tenure there but was making his first I-AA playoff appearance. "They are an outstanding team that probably didn't play as well as it could have. It's difficult when you get behind on the road, playing in a place like we have here. It was difficult for them to bounce back after we put 27 points on the board in the first quarter." Germaine Bennett rushed for 104 yards, his fifth 100-yard game of the season, and two touchdowns, backfield mate Antawn Jenkins added a season-high 99 yards and one score, and Atlantic 10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year Andy Hall threw two touchdown passes to lead the Hens. Hall, a candidate for the I-AA Payton Award, completed 10 passes to up his season total to 206, breaking the UD single season mark of 201 by Rich Gannon in 1986. Hall also went over 3,000 yards of total offense during the game, becoming just the third player in school history to accomplish the feat. Southern Illinois, which entered the game averaging 425.1 yards and 39.1 points per game, never could get anything going as the turnovers mounted. Running back Muhammad Abdulqaadir rushed for 87 yards and went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season while quarterback Joel Sambursky threw for 106 yards before leaving the game late in the third quarter with a possible concussion. Sambursky was hit hard on a pass attempt by Jamie Rotonda and layed motionless on the field for several minutes. He briefly lost consciousness and, as a precaution, was transported by ambulance to nearby Christiana Hospital. He was expected to be released later in the day. The mistakes started early for the Sulikis, who fumbled on the fourth play of the game with Delaware defensive end Shawn Johnson, the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, recovering at the Blue Hen 27-yard line. Five plays later, Hall hit Justin Long on a 14-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead just 3:24 into the game. The Sulikis then fumbled away the ensuing kickoff with Delaware's Leon Clarke recovering on the 33-yard line. Eight plays later, Jenkins scored on a one-yard run. The Hens made it 20-0 on their next possession as Bennett scored on a 19-yard run up the middle and the score increased to 27-0 with 1:47 left in the opening stanza when Jesse O'Neill blocked a punt and Sean Bleiler fell on the ball in the end zone. The Hens took a 34-0 advantage into halftime as Bennett scored on a 17-yard run with 8:05 left in the second quarter. That score was set up by an interception by defensive lineman Chris Mooney that was returned to the SIU 36-yard line. Southern Illinois, which had scored at least 20 points in each game this season, finally got on the board with 11:29 left in the third quarter when senior Tom Koutsos, the Gateway's all-time leading rusher, scored on a two-yard run to make the score 48-7. The score was set up when Frank Johnson recovered a fumble by David Boler at the 27-yard line. The Hens closed the scoring with Hall tossing a 23-yard touchdown pass to Boler with 47 seconds left in the third quarter followed by backup quarterback Ryan Carty hitting Joe Bleymaier on a six-yard scoring pass with 5:13 left to play. "Delaware has a tremendous football team," said SIU head coach Jerry Kill, who led the Salukis to the Gateway co-title this season after going just 1-10 two years ago. "Our strength all season has been that we haven't turned the ball over. You wouldn't have thought that today. We just didn't do our job and Delaware had a lot to do with that."
