Missed
Opportunities Lead to Hens' Fifth-Straight Road
Loss
KINGSTON, RI -- Shane Laisle's
34-yard field goal in the second overtime period lifted
Rhode Island to a 17-14 homecoming win over Delaware in
Atlantic 10 Football Conference action Saturday afternoon at
Meade Stadium.
The defeat was Delaware's fifth straight
road loss dating back to last season. The five road losses
have come by a combined margin of just 17 points, including
four this season by a total of 12. It is the first time
Delaware has lost five consecutive road games since 1939-40.
Delaware lost six consecutive games away from home during
that stretch, five road games and one neutral site game at
Convention Hall in Atlantic City.
The Blue Hens fell to 4-4 on the season,
2-3 in conference play. Three of Delaware's four losses have
come in the final minute of regulation or overtime. Rhode
Island picked up its first league win of the season (1-3)
and raised its record to 3-4 overall.

Delaware outgained Rhode Island, 376-337,
as quarterback Andy Hall had a big day running the
ball. He ran 18 times for 126 yards, making him the seventh
quarterback in school history to run for 100 yards in a
game. Hall also threw for 171 yards, completing 17 of 36
pass attempts. Five of Hall's completions went to running
back Keith Burnell for 46 yards. Burnell also carried
19 times for 67 yards and both Blue Hen
touchdowns.
However, the Blue Hens failed to convert
several opportunities late as Scott Collins missed
field goals of 26 yards and 32 yards in overtime. Collins
also missed a 33-yarder late in the third quarter that could
have given the Blue Hens a 10-point lead and the Blue Hens
fumbled away another opportunity at the Rhode Island 13 with
5:20 left in regulation.
"We just didn't take care of business,"
said Delaware's first-year head coach K.C. Keeler.
"We should have had this one, but we made too many mistakes
and let this thing get away. I give a lot of credit to Rhode
Island and Coach Stowers. Like us, they've been going
through some things with injuries this season, too. But they
hung in there and they made the plays."
Rhode Island got off to a quick start
when Jayson Davis found Wendall Williams for a 46-yard
touchdown pass just 54 seconds into the game.
Delaware got on the board midway through
the first quarter. Burnell broke loose from six yards out to
make it a 7-6 game. The conversion failed, however, after a
bad snap.
The Blue Hens took the lead with one
minute to play in the first half when Burnell scored from
four yards out to cap a seven-play, 80-yard drive. A pass
from Andy Hall to Rick Lavelle completed the
conversion and Delaware led 14-7.
Rhode Island tied the game, though, with
11:03 remaining in regulation when Jayson Davis scored on a
1-yard quarterback sneak and Laisle converted the
PAT.
Delaware had a chance to win it in the
first overtime after Laisle missed from 23 yards out on the
opening possession. However, Collins' missed wide right from
26 yards away to send the game into a second overtime
period. Both kicks were into a 30-mile-per-hour wind.
Delaware had the ball first in the second
extra-period. Collins, this time with the wind at his back,
missed wide right on a 32-yard attempt to give Rhode Island
a chance to win the game. After the Delaware defense held on
consecutive plays, Laisle came onto the field on third down
and nailed the game-winner from 34 yards out to give the
Rams a win over Delaware for the second straight
season.
"It should have never come down to that,"
said Collins, who had tied his own school record with three
field goals last week against James Madison. "I had that
chip shot early on that I should have made. This is the
windiest weather I've ever played in and that definitely was
a factor. I'm just really disappointed right
now."
Dan Mulhern led the Delaware
defense with 16 tackles, including four for lost yardage.
Mondoe Davis had 14 tackles and forced a Rhode Island
fumble.
Delaware returns home, where it has won
five straight, to face New Hampshire next Saturday at 12
noon.
