Turnovers Prove
Costly as Blue Hens Fall to
UMass
AMHERST, MA -- Mistake-free
football by Massachusetts and four Delaware turnovers made
the difference as the No. 13 Minutemen topped Delaware,
17-7, in Atlantic 10 Football Conference action at McGuirk
Alumni Stadium on Saturday.
The defeat was Delaware's sixth straight
road loss dating back to last season. The six road losses
have come by a combined margin of just 27 points, including
five this season by a total of 22. It is the first time
Delaware has lost six consecutive games away from home since
1939-40. Delaware lost six consecutive games away from home
during that stretch, five road games and one neutral site
game at Convention Hall in Atlantic City.

The Blue Hens fell to 5-5 on the season,
3-4 in conference play. Massachusetts stayed in the Atlantic
10 Conference title hunt and NCAA I-AA Playoff race with the
win. The Minutemen raised their record to 7-2 overall and
5-1 in league play.
The Blue Hen defense allowed only one
offensive touchdown, but the offense could not find the
endzone after Andy Hall's 1-yard touchdown dive early
in the second quarter. Field position was a big part of
that. The Blue Hens' average starting position for the game
was their own 19. Delaware was also just 3-for-15 on third
down, including a span of 2-1/2 quarters without converting
a third-down attempt.
"We dropped too many balls today and that
put us into some bad situations," said Delaware coach
K.C. Keeler. "We need someone to make plays in the
passing game. You need to drive the ball on offense. But
that is difficult without any play-makers. I thought we were
outstanding on defense. We had a good game plan and played
with tremendous heart. But we gave up a couple of big plays
and couldn't come up with many of our own."
Hall's sneak was set-up by Germaine
Bennett's 51-yard run to the Minuteman 1. Two plays
later, Hall dove in from a yard out to cap the nine-play,
82-yard drive and give the Blue Hens a 7-0 lead.
However, the Minutemen would take a 10-7
lead before halftime. After the teams traded punts,
Massachuetts gained possession at its own 49. Three plays
later, Jeff Krohn hit Adrian Zullo with a 36-yard touchdown
pass to tie the game.
UMass took a three-point lead when Doug
White connected on a 35-yard field goal with 2:45 left in
the first half.
Delaware had a chance to score just
before halftime, but time ran out on the Blue Hens. With no
timeouts left and the clock running under 15 seconds,
Delaware elected to take one last shot at the end zone on
third-and-12 from the UMass 15. However, Hall's pass was
knocked down in the end zone as time expired and the Blue
Hens missed on a chance to tie the game or take a
lead.
The Minutemen extended their lead late in
the third quarter when linebacker Mark Kimener intercepted a
Hall pass and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown. Hall
came into the day with the fewest interceptions of any
quarterback in the Atlantic 10 with just two. However, he
was intercepted by the Minutemen three times on Saturday.
Kimener's interception snapped Hall's string of attempts
without an interception at 145.
Hall finished the day with 16 carries for
69 yards, which lifted him to a UD single-season record. His
793 rushing yards this season sets a new mark for
single-season rushing by a quarterback, eclipsing the mark
of Leo Hamlett. Hamlett rushed for 755 yards in
1995.
The Blue Hens knocked UMass's Krohn out
in the third quarter, but his replacement Tim Day did a more
than adequate job. Although he didn't produce points, Day
was 6-for-7 passing for 46 yards and did not turn the ball
over.
Delaware looked like it still had life
when a pair of big defensive plays thwarted a UMass scoring
opportunity early in the fourth quarter. R.J. Cobbs, who
finished the day with 17 carries for 120 yards, looked like
he had a 90-yard touchdown run until Sidney
Haugabrook caught him from behind at the Delaware 6. The
Blue Hen defense stuffed UMass on three consecutive plays
before Dan Mulhern broke through to block White's 25-yard
field goal attempt with 11:41 to play. Mulhern also had 14
tackles on the day, marking the third consecutive game he
had 14 or more stops.
However, two of Delaware's last three
possessions ended in interceptions to stifle any hopes of a
comeback.
The win was just the fourth by UMass in
24 meetings with the Blue Hens, and was just Delaware's
second loss in 12 visits to Amherst.
Delaware heads back north next Saturday
when it takes on Maine at Alfond Stadium in Orono beginning
at 12 noon.
