Rally Falls Short
with Blocked FG in Final Minute

RICHMOND, VA -- Scott
Collins' 18-yard field goal attempt was blocked by
Maurice Newbill with 17 seconds remaining to thwart a
furious Delaware rally and lift Richmond to a 15-13 Atlantic
10 Football Conference victory Saturday at Richmond
Stadium.
"We had a great situation at the end and
played really hard," said Delaware head coach K.C.
Keeler, who suffered his first loss as Delaware's coach.
"We got the ball close and should have put it in.
"This game was very frustrating," said
Keeler. "I thought we went backwards between last week's win
over Georgia Southern and this game. We fought hard, but
Richmond executed better. We stopped ourselves. Our players
fought back, but we missed that crucial field goal
opportunity."
Allowing 307 yards in the first half,
Delaware, ranked No. 9 in this week's Sports Network Top 25
poll, found itself trailing 12-0 midway through the second
quarter. Keith Burnell's 2-yard run got Delaware on
the board with 1:01 remaining in the first half and cut the
deficit to 12-7. Burnell, a senior transfer from Virginia
Tech, rushed 17 times for 70 yards on the
afternoon.
Richmond's Doug Kirchner, however, nailed
a 43-yard field goal with no time left to give the Spiders
(1-1) a 15-7 halftime lead.
Delaware's defense helped get the Blue
Hens (1-1) back in the game, limiting the Spiders to just 64
yards in the second half, including 17 in the fourth
quarter. The Blue Hens got to within two points with 12:18
left when Andy Hall scored on a quarterback sneak
from the two. Hall's score was set up by an interception by
Ricardo Walker that he returned 31 yards to the
Richmond 29.
The Blue Hen defense forced a pair of
Richmond punts, including a three-and-out with four miunutes
to play, to give the offense a chance to win it. Taking over
at the Richmond 46 with 3:29 left, Delaware did not gain a
yard on its first two plays. However, on third-and-10, Hall
found Justin Long (five receptions, 74 yards) for 28
yards to the Richmond 18.
Burnell followed with an eight-yard burst
and Hall snuck forward for a first down to the Richmond 7.
Burnell then carried on first-and-goal to the 3. Hall and
Burnell were stuffed, however, on the following two plays,
setting the stage for Collins' attempt to win the game. The
kick, however, was blocked by Slade, who scooped up the
loose ball and raced to midfield before being
tackled.
Richmond jumped out to its 12-0 lead on
Lee Williams 2-yard touchdown run just 4:18 into the game
and a 25-yard scoring pass from Stacy Tutt to Boyd Ouden
just 5:25 later. Ouden finished the day with seven catches
for 162 yards.
Hall, a junior transfer from Georgia
Tech, finished the day 21-of-39 passing for 244 yards. The
39 passing attempts ranks seventh in UD history for attempts
in a game and are the most since Matt Nagy threw 39 times
against Villanova in November 2000.
Redshirt freshman Brian Ingram
finished the day with seven catches for 92 yards,
including a 47-yarder that set up Burnell's second-quarter
score.
Delaware had defeated Richmond three
consecutive times and eight of the last nine meetings.
However, the Blue Hens, which outgained Richmond, 450-373,
failed to covert on fourth down three times inside the
Richmond 30 and had the late field goal attempt
blocked.
For the first time in school history, the
Blue Hens gained 450 yards and failed to score 14 points.
The last time Delaware gained 450 and was held to that low
of a score was in a 21-14 loss to The Citadel on October 28,
1978. In fact, it was only the 12th time since 1966 that
Delaware gained 450 yards and failed to win. Since 1966,
Delaware is 123-12-1 when amassing 450 yards of total
offense.
Along with Salde's heroics, Richmond also
got an outstanding effort on defense from Ramon Richeson.
Richeson finished the afternoon with 23 tackles, nine solos,
and a fumble recovery
The Blue Hens will look to get back on
track next Saturday when the travel to Charleston, SC to
face The Citadel in a 2 p.m. non-conference
clash.
