NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware field hockey team extended its winning streak to five games after a 4-0 victory over Rutgers at Rullo Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Tori Karsten led the Hens with two goals, marking the first multi-goal effort of her career. Amanda Warrington and Michelle Drummonds also chipped in with a score apiece.

Goalie Nikki Rhoades posted her third shutout in 2007 after blanking Ohio State and Richmond earlier in the season. She is just the second Blue Hen goaltender to post three shutouts in the first five games of a season since 1994. Teammate Megan Allen accomplished the feat three years ago.

Delaware opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Karsten handled a deflection from Amanda Warrington’s initial shot and drilled it past Rutgers’ goalie, Leslie Kelly.

Just four minutes into the second half, Warrington added her first goal of the season. It was her first score since she recorded two goals against Lafayette in 2005.

Sixteen minutes later, Karsten added her second goal of the game off of a pass from Alexis Esbitt. Michelle Drummonds capped the scoring after taking a pass from Rachel Schexnayder and firing it past Rutgers’ goalie with seven minutes left in the game.

Delaware outshot Rutgers, 12-4, and held a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Blue Hens have now won seven of their last eight meetings with Rutgers. Their only loss during that stretch came last season when they fell, 5-4, in double overtime.

Delaware returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when the team faces Bucknell at Rullo Stadium.
