NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware field hockey team was shut down by the No. 2 Maryland Terrapins in a 7-0 loss at Rullo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Maryland’s Janneke van Leeuwen had a career day, posting three goals and two assists. Susie Rowe also had two goals, while Ellen Ott scored once and notched an assist.

The seven-goal loss tied the second worst deficit in Delaware history. The Hens lost 8-1 to No. 3 ranked Maryland in 1998, while they fell 8-0 to the top-ranked Terrapins in 2000.

During the contest, Delaware (9-5) mustered only a single shot. On a penalty corner, Molly Burke (at right) uncorked a laser that was stopped by goalie Kathryn Masson on a diving glove-hand save in the 29th minute.

After that point, Delaware’s offense was silenced by the Maryland defense. The Terps outshot the Hens, 25-1, while they also finished the contest with an 18-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Just over a minute into the game, Maryland (16-0) struck early on a breakaway goal by Katie O’Donnell. Following the quick score, the Hen defense buckled down and kept the Terrapins off the board until just before halftime.

In the 33rd minute of action, Susie Rowe found the back of the cage to put Maryland up by two. Following halftime, the Terrapin offense found its stride.

Fourteen minutes into the second half, Rowe found Janneke van Leeuwen for her first goal of the game on a penalty corner. Less than three minutes later, Rowe and van Leeuwen assisted on Ellen Ott’s third goal of the season.

Following the score, Delaware switched goalies, bringing in senior Megan Allen. Despite the change, van Leeuwen struck again for her second goal of the game, which was immediately followed by Rowe’s second score.

In the 69th minute, van Leeuwen capped the scoring, taking a pass from Ott for her third goal of the game. It was the first hat trick surrendered by the Hens since James Madison’s Melissa Stefaniak accomplished the feat in 2005.

Delaware has now lost four straight contests and six of its last eight after starting the season with a seven-game winning streak.

The Blue Hens return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host the No. 11 ranked Duke Blue Devils at Rullo Stadium.
