COLUMBUS, OH -- The University of Delaware field hockey team topped Kent State, 3-2, during the final day of the Buckeye Classic at the OSU North Turf Field on Sunday afternoon.
A day after defeating No. 13 ranked Ohio State on its home turf, Delaware improved to 2-0 after Molly Burke’s second goal of the game put the Hens ahead for good with just 13 minutes left in regulation.
The multi-goal effort was the fourth of Burke’s career and the first one coming away from Rullo Stadium. After scoring one of the Hens’ four goals yesterday, she also became the first Blue Hen to score three goals during the team’s first two games since Erica LaBar did it in 2003.
Senior Amanda Warrington (at right), after missing all but four games during the 2006 campaign due to injuries, also recorded two assists in the win. It was her second career multi-assist game.
Goalie Megan Allen recorded a save in her first appearance of the season after relieving Nikki Rhoades at halftime. Allen, like Warrington, played in only four games last season due to injuries.
Casey Howard also notched her first goal of the season after taking a pass from Alexis Esbitt and driving it past the Kent State keeper at 10:48 in the first half.
Freshmen Jackie Tait and Missy Woodie picked up their first career points after they each recorded an assist.
Delaware finished the Buckeye Classic as the only undefeated team after Bucknell fell to Ohio State, 6-1, during the final match on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Hens return to action on Saturday at 12 noon when they take on the Richmond Spiders at Crenshaw Field in Virginia.
