NEWARK, DE -- Michelle Drummonds scored her seventh goal of the season, but Drexel's attack was too much to handle as the University of Delaware field hockey bowed to the Dragons, 4-1, in a Colonial Athletic Association bout on Friday night at Rullo Stadium.
In the contest, Delaware (10-8, 3-4 CAA) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. In the 22nd minute of action, Molly Burke hit Drummonds (at right) with a perfect pass, which she quickly deposited into the cage.
Down a goal, the Dragons went on the attack. Three minutes after the Hens’ goal, Drexel’s Carolina Gibernau earned a penalty stroke. With the free shot, she quickly knotted the game at one.
Following halftime, Drexel (11-7, 5-2) came out firing. Emily Horvat scored her sixth goal of the season in the 42nd minute, while Kim Tunell added her third with less than 13 minutes remaining in regulation.
Up by two, the Dragons sealed the victory off a penalty corner when Sarah Gostomski snuck a shot past Hens’ backup goalie Megan Allen in the 64th minute.
During the match, Drexel outshot Delaware, 13-7, while the two teams each had seven penalty corners.
The loss was Delaware’s third against Drexel in team history. The Hens still hold a commanding lead in the all-time series, 19-3, but they have now lost the last two meetings between the schools.
The Blue Hens return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Hofstra at Rullo Stadium in the team’s regular season finale.
