NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware field hockey team scored two goals in a 1:53 span as the Blue Hens won their third game over a ranked opponent by defeating No. 17 William & Mary, 2-0, in Colonial Athletic Association play Friday evening at Rullo Stadium.
Delaware (6-7, 3-1 CAA) was held scoreless until 38:25 into the game when Kaili Kao (right) scored off a rebound to record her first goal of the season. Just 1:53 later the Hens had another great scoring chance as Delaware was awarded a penalty stroke after Gwen Hunter, the Tribe goalkeeper, took down a Blue Hen and didn’t make a play on the ball. Lindsey Piester was successful on the penalty stroke and gave the Hens a 2-0 lead, which they maintained throughout the second half.
The Tribe (8-4, 2-1 CAA), who were one of only two undefeated teams left in the conference, had numerous scoring chances as they were awarded 13 penalty corners and outshot the Hens 8-6. However, Nikki Rhoades posted four saves and recorded Delaware’s first shutout of the season.
The win is Delaware’s first over the Tribe since 2003 and puts the Hens into second place in the CAA.
The Blue Hens will return to action Sunday afternoon when they host No. 3 Old Dominion at Rullo Stadium at 1 p.m.
