 DURHAM, NC -- Cara-Lynn Lopresti scored two goals, both as part of her team’s four-goal output in the first half, as No. 3 ranked Duke defeated the University of Delaware field hockey squad 5-1 Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Duke/Champions Tournament at Williams Field.
The Blue Hens, who downed No. 16 Michigan State 5-4 in their tournament opening round game Saturday, dropped to 1-1 on the season while Duke improved to 2-0. The Blue Devils are now 5-0 all-time vs. Delaware.
Delaware, which rallied from a three-goal deficit to down Michigan State, fell behind 4-0 after the first half against Duke but could never catch the Blue Devils.
Duke, which held a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in penalty corners, scored three goals in the first 11 minutes of the contest and never looked back. Amy Stopford opened the scoring on a penalty stroke just six minutes and nine seconds into the game and Lopresti scored her first goal of the day off a feed from Amy Survilla just over three minutes later.
The Blue Devils made it 3-0 nearly 11 minutes into the contest when Ashley Pultorak scored off a feed from Laura Suchoski and Lopresti capped the first-half run with an unassisted goal with 7:39 left before halftime. Delaware did not manage a shot on goal during the half.
Delaware finally got on the board with 17:03 left to play when senior Stephanie Swain (William Penn/Middletown, DE; at right) scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 4-1. Swain, who recorded a goal and an assist vs. Michigan State, tallied her eighth career goal.
Duke capped the scoring on a goal by Marian Dickinson off a feed from Lauren Miller with just 46 seconds remaining.
Delaware will continue action next weekend when it hosts the annual Blue Hen Classic at Rullo Stadium. Delaware will take on Ohio State in the opener Saturday, Sept. 2 at 11:30 a.m. while Syracuse will take on Pennsylvania at 2:30 p.m. The Hens will take on Syracuse Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
