NEWARK, DE: The University of Delaware field hockey team will begin its quest for a Colonial Athletic Association title Wednesday as the No. 6 seeded Hens will travel to take on No. 3 seeded Hofstra University at James M. Shuart Stadium at 6 p.m.
Delaware (7-11, 3-5 CAA), which won the CAA field hockey title in 2004, is led by sophomore Casey Howard who ended the season ranked sixth in the CAA in goals scored with nine. Senior Katie Evans (right) is tied with Howard for first on the team with 19 points on six goals and seven assists.
Hofstra (12-6, 5-3 CAA), which is ranked 18th in the most recent STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, enters the game with two straight victories and is led by current CAA Player of the Week Charlia Warner, who scored a total of six goals in last weekend’s 4-1 wins over both James Madison and Virginia Commonwealth.
The Blue Hens won the only meeting between the two teams this season on September 24 as Molly Burke scored the game winning goal with 2:51 left in overtime as the Hens downed Hofstra, 3-2, in their Colonial Athletic Association opener at Rullo Stadium.
The winner will advance to Saturday afternoon’s semifinals at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, Va where it would take on No. 2 seed James Madison. The championship match will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 5 in Virginia Beach.
Delaware leads the all-time series 17-2.
