HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The University of Delaware field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss after two overtimes and three rounds of penalty strokes to Colonial Athletic Association opponent Hofstra Sunday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Hofstra’s Pemba Ramdoo scored an unassisted goal 2:56 into the game to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. Delaware answered just before the end of the first half on a pass from Carly Campana to Casey Howard with 2:31 remaining.
Megan Allen made two of her 10 saves in the second half to keep the score tied and send the game into overtime. Delaware controlled the first overtime, taking three shots and drawing two penalty corners. The Pride took one shot and did not draw a corner in the first overtime. The second overtime was controlled by Hofstra who took five shots and drew a corner, while Delaware managed just two shots.
Hofstra won the game in the third round of penalty strokes (3-3, 2-2, 1-0) to continue the Pride’s undefeated home record.
The match marks the 19th meeting between the two teams with the Blue Hens holding an 17-2 all-time advantage.
The Blue Hens, playing without All-American Amanda Warrington, fall to 5-5 (0-1 CAA) on the season, while the Pride improve to 7-2 (1-0) overall.
Delaware returns to action on Friday, September 30 when the Blue Hens travel to CAA opponent Virginia Commonwealth for a 7 p.m. game.
