NORFOLK, VA - Three University of Delaware field hockey players earned All-Colonial Athletic Association recognition as the conference presented its year-end awards and all-conference teams Thursday night in Norfolk to kick off the 2005 CAA Field Hockey Championship weekend. Sophomore back Molly Burke (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) garnished first-team honors, while junior midfielder Katie Evans (Newtown Square, PA/Villa Maria Academy) was named to the second-team and freshman forward Casey Howard (Camden, DE/Caesar Rodney) was named to the All-Rookie Team.
Burke, a CAA All-Rookie Team selection in 2004, led the Blue Hens in scoring with 20 points and in goals with nine on the season. Burke was named CAA Player of the Week after scoring the first goal of her collegiate career off of a penalty corner in Delaware’s 3-2 victory over University of the Pacific on August 27. The following day, she scored the game-winner 9:27 into overtime to lift Delaware to a 2-1 victory over the University of California. She was also named the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week as she scored two second half goals less than four minutes apart in the Blue Hens 3-2 loss to Towson on October 21. The following week, Burke scored two goals, including the game-winning-goal 8:17 into overtime, to lead Delaware to a 2-1 victory over Drexel.
Evans, a member of the USA Under-21 team, scored 14 points with four goals and a team-high six assists this season. After missing four games to play in the Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile, Evans scored the game-winning-goal to lead Delaware over Virginia Commonwealth, 2-1 in overtime. She notched three assists in Delaware’s 4-1 win over Rutgers on September 9. Evans’ 23 career assists place her fourth on the all-time leaders at Delaware.
Howard was third on the team in scoring with 16 points and third in goals with seven. Howard scored two goals in her collegiate debut, including the game-winner just three minutes into overtime, as Delaware defeated the University of the Pacific, 3-2. She scored two goals to lead the Blue Hens to a 5-1 victory over Stanford University on August 30. Howard ended her season on a high note with a goal and an assist in Delaware’s 3-0 win over La Salle University October 30.
