RICHMOND, VA – Sophomore first baseman Ryan Cuneo was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week and senior closer David Slovak was selected as the top pitcher after the two helped lead the University of Delaware baseball team to a 3-2 record and its first road conference series win of the season last week.

The award was the first of Cuneo’s career, while Slovak (at right) garnered Pitcher of the Week honors once as a junior last season.

Cuneo (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) continued his torrid streak at the plate, hitting safely in all five of Delaware’s games to extend his hitting streak to 19. It is currently tied for the 12th longest streak in program history and the fifth best since 2000.

During the week, he hit a team-best .476 and ranked first on the squad with 10 hits, 11 RBI, and an .857 slugging percentage. He also slammed two home runs, one against against Rutgers and another in the first game of the Georgia State series on Friday.

In the series opener against the Panthers, he finished with three hits and five RBI, including a two-run single that completed the team’s comeback victory. He returned to the diamond to post two more hits on Saturday and another three during Sunday’s action.

Slovak (Louisville, KY/Eastern) also had an outstanding week, making three appearances while posting two saves. During his 5.0 innings of work, he did not allow a hit or run and notched seven strikeouts.

In his first outing, he struck out two in one inning of work against Wilmington University before coming back to strike out five in four innings against Georgia State on Friday and Saturday.

Against the Panthers, he posted back-to-back two-inning saves. With his two saves, he improved his career total to 17, just one shy of the all-time program record set by Scott Gellert from 1994-97.

The two players become the third and fourth Blue Hens to earn conference accolades this year. Jon Duvall and Matt Harden garnered Rookie of the Week nods earlier in the season.

Along with Cuneo, UNC Wilmington’s Mark Carver was named the Co-Player of the Week, while Virginia Commonwealth’s Joe Van Meter was picked as the top rookie.
