PHILADELPHIA -- Sophomore infielder Alex Buchholz had three hits, an RBI and a run scored and six Delaware pitchers combined to hold La Salle to only five hits as the University of Delaware baseball team upped its winning streak to 11 games with a 5-2 win over La Salle at Hank DeVincent Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Buchholz (right) missed the cycle by one element for the second straight day, while Adam Tsakonas and Ryan Engelhardt each had two hits and an RBI for the Blue Hens (25-18).
The Hens took the lead before recording an out in the top of the first. With two on and one out, Buchholz extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a double to leftfield that scored Ryan Jablonski and left runners on second and third with no outs. However, La Salle starter Kenny Elkind then struck out the next three Delaware hitters to get out of the inning with only one run scoring.
The Explorers (16-26) took the lead with only one hit in the third inning. After getting two runners on base with one out, Delaware starter Evan Bowen hit Justin Handler to load the bases and then hit John Rickards to force in the tying run. Rich Prall’s sacrifce fly brought in John Malloy to give La Salle a 2-1 lead.
The Hens tied the game in the top of the fifth. With runners on first and third and one out, Brandon Menchaca singled through the right side to score Kyle Davis for the tie. T.J. Chism then retired Buchholz and Bryan Hagerich to get out of the inning and strand two more baserunners. Delaware regained the lead in the sixth on an RBI single by Engelhardt, but again left runs on the field as Explorer reliever Christian Schulz struckout Menchaca with the bases loaded to end the inning. The Hens then stranded another runner on third in the top of the seventh.
Delaware added two insurance runs in the ninth. Buchholz’ tripled with one out then scored on a single by Hagerich. Tsakonas then tripled to center to score Hagerich and put the Hens up 5-2. Tsakonas reached third with one out but was stranded, the fourth Blue Hen runner stranded on third on the day.
Matt Heppner came on to pitch for the Blue Hens in the ninth, and after allowing a leadoff single to Kevin Prendergast, induced a double play ball from Malloy and got Handler on a groundout to end the game and give Heppner his first save of the season.
Dan Richardson picked up the win for Delaware to move to 2-0, while Christian Schulz took the loss for La Salle to fall to 1-2.
The Hens return to action this weekend with a series at VCU this Friday through Sunday.
