NEWARK, DE -- Senior pitchers Brent Gaphardt (right) and Chad Kerfoot combined to allow only four hits and strike out 12 batters and the offense pounded out 10 runs and 13 hits as the University of Delaware baseball team rolled to a 10-0 win over James Madison on Friday afternoon.
Bryan Hagerich had three hits for the Hens, while Brandon Menchaca had two triples and three RBI. Ryan Jablonski had a hit to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
For the second straight day, the Hens took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Alex Buchholz’ single brought home Jablonski and Adam Tsakonas’ sacrifice fly with one out scored Menchaca.
After walking the first two batters of the top of the second, Gaphardt struck out Steven Caseres, retired Alex Foltz on a great sliding catch by Hagerich and struck out Dan Santobianco on a 3-2 count to end the inning.
Delaware exploded for seven-runs in the bottom of the third. With one out Hagerich homered to right center to put the Hens up 4-0. The home run was Hagerich’s 46th of his career, tying him with head coach Jim Sherman for second place in program history. With two on, Scott Shockley tripled down the rightfield line, making it a 6-0 game. After the bases were loaded, the Dukes lifted starter Kurt Houck for Trevor Kaylid. Menchaca then tripled off the wall in left center to score all three runners and give the Hens a double-digit lead.
Gaphardt allowed only three hits in six shutout innings before being replaced by Kerfoot, who came on and promptly struckout the Dukes 3-4-5 hitters in his first inning of work. In his second inning, Kerfoot allowed two baserunners with one out before getting Mitchell Moses to ground into a 3-6-1 double play to end the inning.
Menchaca tripled again in the bottom of the eighth, his 21st in his career, placing him alone in second place in school history.
Gaphardt picked up the win to move to 4-2, while Houck took the loss to fall to 4-8. Kerfoot worked four innings and picked up his first save of the season.
The Hens and Dukes wrap-up the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
