NEWARK, DE -- Senior pitcher Billy Harris established a new program record for career appearances with his 73rd and dominated the potent James Madison lineup as the University of Delaware baseball team downed James Madison University, 6-1, in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Thursday afternoon.
Harris (right) allowed only three hits and struck out eight in six innings of work against the Dukes (21-30, 10-16). Ryan Jablonski had three hits for the second consecutive game and Brandon Menchaca had two hits to become the 30th player in program history to reach 200 career hits. Jablonski and Menchaca, the first and second hitters in the order, accounted for four of the Hens’ six runs. Alex Buchholz went hitless to snap a 19-game hitting streak.
Delaware (28-20, 17-10 CAA) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and second and two outs, Adam Tsakonas ripped a double to the gap in left center that brought around Jablonski and Menchaca to give the Hens the two-run advantage.
The Hens doubled their lead in the second. After a Kyle Davis bunt moved runners to second and third with one out, Jablonski ripped a single through the left side to score both runners.
Delaware went up 6-0 on Menchaca’s two-run homer in the fourth, a line shot that clanged off the foul pole in leftfield.
Harris pitched six outstanding innings before giving way to Matt Heppner and then David Slovak. The duo allowed only two baserunners in three innings of relief.
Harris earned the win to move to 6-1, and finishes the regular season a perfect 6-0 against CAA opponents. Dukes starter Jacob Cook took the loss to fall to 6-5.
The assured Delaware of defeating all 10 CAA opponents at least once, the first time the Hens have done so since joining the CAA in 2002.
The Hens and Dukes continue their series tomorrow at 3 p.m.
