HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The University of Delaware baseball team jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and never looked back on its way to an 11-2 rout over Hofstra University on Saturday afternoon.
Todd Davison and Ryan Jablonski had three hits apiece for the Blue Hens, while Matt Heppner pitched his third complete game in as many starts this season. Davison (right) also established a new program record by starting his 200th consecutive game, a mark formerly set by Joe Shockley’s 199 consecutive games from 1977-80.
The Hens took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After two consecutive hit batsmen, Jablonski launched his third home run of the season over the wall in right field to stake the Hens (19-13, 6-8 CAA) to the early lead. Brandon Menchaca’s double in the next inning restored the three-run Delaware advantage after Hofstra had scored once in the bottom of the third.
The game remained 4-1 until the Blue Hen sixth, when Delaware hit four doubles in five batters to put up four more runs and take a commanding 8-1 lead.
The eight runs were more than enough for Heppner, who allowed only one hit between the third and seventh innings. Heppner gave up six hits, walked two and struck out three to earn his fourth win of the season. He accounts for all three of Delaware’s complete games this year. Starter Will DeVito took the loss for Hofstra (14-22-1, 5-12 CAA), dropping his record to 1-4.
Delaware and Hofstra will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Hempstead, NY.
