Drops Doubleheader to Penn State, 6-1,
12-6

DE -- The University of Delaware
baseball team dropped a doubleheader to
Penn State, who used 22 total hits on
Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium to sweep
the Hens, 6-1 in the first game and 12-6
in the nightcap.
Taking
the losses for Delaware (7-10) were Mike
McGuire (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) (1-2) and
Brent Gaphardt (Bel Air, MD/Dundalk) (0-3)
while Sean Stidfole (2-2) and Craig Clark
(1-0) posted wins for the Nittany
Lions.
Todd
Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine)
led the Blue Hen offense batting 4-for-5
in the second game, 4-for-8 overall, and
added a run scored. Bryan Hagerich
(Somerset, PA/Somerset-at right) and Adam
Tsakonas (Pottstown, PA/Boyertown Area)
each added two hits, an RBI, and a run
scored while Hagerich added a deep home
run to center field late in the
ninth.
McGuire
went the distance in the seven-inning
first game allowing six runs on eight
hits. Penn State's Stidfole also pitched
in all seven as he let up one run and held
the Hens to only two hits.
The
Nittany Lions were led by Matt Cavagnaro,
who batted 2-for-3 with a triple, a
double, and two runs scored. Brian Ernst
and Aaron Greenfield each drove in two
runs in the effort as Greenfield put a two
run shot over the left field fence in the
second inning.
Delaware's
only run in the contest came in the fifth
inning when Dave Harden (Wilmington,
DE/Dickinson) was hit by a pitch and
advanced to second when Dan Kozek
(Medford, NJ/Shawnee) singled, and scored
on a wild pitch.
In
the second game Gaphardt allowed five
runs, four earned, in the first inning by
walking four batters and allowing two
hits. He rebounded from the inning and did
not let in another run before being
replaced by Chad Kerfoot (Owings,
MD/Northern) in the sixth.
Kerfoot
wound up stunting the Penn State offense
until the ninth inning when it exploded
once again for five runs on five hits,
leaving only one man on base.
The
Hens came within one run of tying the game
in the fifth inning. After scoring three
in the fourth, Delaware put another run on
the board when Menchaca singled to right,
Davison singled up the middle, and Adam
Tsakonas (Pottstown, PA/Boyertown Area)
singled to left. The inning ended there as
Brian Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana) and
Dan Richardson (Bear, DE/Caravel) each
flied out to end the inning.
Delaware
left 11 men stranded on the base-paths
during the second game and 15 overall for
the day while Penn State left 13 on the
bags in the second game and 16
overall.

Blue Hens and the Nittany Lions continue
their three-game series tommorrow at 1
p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium..
