Delaware
Baseball Uses Eight Doubles To Tie A
Single Game Record and Defeat New York
Tech, 15-1
NEWARK,
DE (April 11, 2005) -- The University of
Delaware baseball team overcame the loss
of two influential seniors who were
injured in a car accident Friday night by
defeating New York Tech, 15-1 on Monday
afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Blue
Hens clouted eight doubles which ties the
Delaware record for most doubles in a game
set on April 6, 1997 against
Rider.
In
light of the absence of senior co-captain
Dave Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) and
senior second baseman Brock Donovan (New
Castle, DE/William Penn), the Blue Hens
pounded out 19 hits and three home runs as
each starter had at least one hit for
extra bases. Kelly Buber (Yuba City,
CA/Yuba Community-at right) led the pack
with four RBI and three runs scored by
hitting a triple away from the cycle in
his first full game back from a hamstring
injury.
Scott
Rambo (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) evened
his record at 3-3 on the season by
pitching four hitless innings before
allowing one run on two hits in the fifth,
as the Hens improve to 13-15 overall. Joe
Esposito picked up his first loss of the
season and drops to 5-1 as New York Tech
falls to 9-12 overall after taking two of
three from Central Connecticut
State.
All
eight of Delaware's doubles came from a
starter as Brandon Menchaca (Wilmington,
DE/Concord) was the only one of the
opening nine who did not double, but did
send a round-tripper deep to left field
for his fifth home run of the season in
the bottom of the seventh. Buber shot his
third home run of the season to deep left
in the same inning but it was Adam
Tsakonas (Pottstown, PA/Boyertown Area)
who started the trend in the bottom of the
fourth with a smash over the wall in
left-center for his second of the
year.
Seven
Blue Hens had multiple hits in the effort
as Brian Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana)
joined Buber in the three-hit club to give
him his third three-hit game of the
season. Meanwhile, Bryan Hagerich
(Somerset, PA/Somerset) extended his
hitting streak to eight games by tacking
in a single to go along with his double
and bat .500 for the afternoon.
The
Delaware pitching staff held the Bears to
one run on five hits and only walked four
batters while striking out four on the
afternoon.
Bryan
Pastor had a pair of hits for New York
Tech as Baker DeCamp was the only Bear to
hit for extra bases with a double to left
in the top of the fifth.
The
Blue Hens opened the game with a pair of
three-run innings highlighted by run
scoring doubles from Todd Davison (Somers
Point, NJ) and Hagerich in the first and
Dan Kozek (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) in the
second. Delaware's four-run third inning
was kicked off by a pair of singles by
Hagerich and Menchaca and was continued
by Dan Richardson (Bear, DE/Caravel) who
sent a run scoring double off the wall in
center field. Buber banged home two more
runs with a double before Valichka ended
the inning by flying out to
left.
Delaware
has now averaged 15.67 runs per game and
18.67 hits per game over the last three
contests.
The
Blue Hens return to action on Tuesday,
April 12 when they travel to Dover, DE to
face Delaware State University for a
single game slated for 3 p.m.
