December 16, 2007

Athlete photoNEWARK, DE -- Sophomore wide receiver Mark Duncan, who had a solid performance in the Blue Hens' NCAA championship game football loss to Appalachian State Friday night, has been named the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending Dec 16.

Duncan (at right), a sophomore criminal justice major from Clarksburg, MD (Suitland High School), caught seven passes for 83 yards and a touchdown for the No. 13 ranked Blue Hens, who fell to three-time defending national champion Applachian State 49-21 in the NCAA championship game at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, TN.

Duncan caught an acrobatic 39-yard scoring toss from Joe Flacco with 1:10 left in the second quarter to cut the Mountaineer lead to 21-7.

For the season, Duncan was the Hens' second leading receiver with 70 receptions for 916 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. He averaged 13.1 yards per reception.

Delaware finished one of the finest seasons in school history with an 11-4 mark and their second trip to the national title game for the second time in five seasons. The Hens defeated Delaware State 44-7 at home in the first round, downed top-ranked and undefeated Northern Iowa 39-27 on the road in the quarterfinals, and No. 3 ranked Southern Illinois 20-17 on the road in the semifinals on their way to the championship game.
