NEWARK, DE -- Junior pitcher Mike McGuire, who came within two outs of the eighth no-hitter in program history in a Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Tournament win over Old Dominion Friday night, is the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending May 28.
McGuire, a righthanded pitcher from Ridley, PA (Ridley High School), is the final recipient of the award for the 2006-07 season. The weekly awards will resume the last week in August when UD athletics competition resumes.
McGuire (at right) allowed only one hit and struck out seven in his longest outing as a Blue Hen as he helped Delaware post a 4-0 win over Old Dominion at Wilmington, NC and helped Delaware earn a spot in the CAA Championship game vs. Virginia Commonwealth.
The 6-7 righthander overmatched the No. 1 seeded Monarchs, who never advanced a runner past second base. Delaware, the CAA regular season co-champion, improved to 32-22 with the win. However, the Hens' season came to a close the next day as Delaware fell to VCU 10-4 in 13 innings in the title game.
McGuire carried his no-hit bid until there was one out in the ninth, when Jake McAloose knocked a single up the middle just out of the reach of Davis at second base. With his pitch count high, McGuire was then lifted in favor of David Slovak.
McGuire, who is expected to be selected in the June Major League Baseball Draft, finished the season with a record of 3-1 and a 4.26 earned run average.
