NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware senior men's lacrosse standout Dan Deckelbaum, who led the Blue Hens to a win over UMBC in the NCAA quarterfinals Sunday in Annapolis, MD, is the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending May 21.
Deckelbaum, a senior midfielder from Owings Mills, MD (Owings Mills High School), netted three goals and dished out an assist to lead the No. 15 ranked Blue Hens (13-5) to a 10-6 win over No. 13 UMBC in front of over 10,000 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
The win, the Blue Hens' seventh straight, sends Delaware to the NCAA Final Four for the first time in school history. Delaware will face national-power Johns Hopkins, the No. 3 seed in the tournament and fifth ranked team in the nation on Saturday, May 26 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD.
Delaware, which also got three goals from Jordan Hall in the win, broke away from a 3-3 halftime tie to post the victory. Deckelbaum, who also dished out an assist, recorded his fifth hat trick of the season and the ninth of his career. He scored two goals just 3:34 apart in the third quarter to help the Hens break away.
