athlete photoNEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware baseball relief pitcher David Slovak has been selected as the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending May 7.

Slovak, a 6-0, 170 junior from Louisville, KY (Shelton State Community College), led the red-hot Blue Hens to a perfect 4-0 record during the week as he collected one victory and established a new school record saves in a season.

The Blue Hens (23-18, 14-9 Colonial Athletic Association) moved into the thick of the CAA race as they swept William & Mary in a three-game set at Bob Hannah Stadium. Delaware opened the week with a 5-4 win at UMBC and followed with wins of 10-6, 8-4, and 8-3 over William & Mary. Delaware travels to league-leading Virginia Commonwealth for a key weekend set May 11-13 in Richmond, VA.

Slovak enjoyed an outstanding week as he appeared in three games, pitched five innings, allowed four hits, and struck out three without allowing an earned run. He earned the win in two innings of relief in the win over UMBC, pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the save in the 8-4 win over William & Mary, and pitched one inning to pick up another save in the 8-3t triumph over the Tribe.

Slovak's nine saves breaks the school single-season record of eight held by Bob Koontz in 1988 and Scott Gellert in 1997. For the year, Slovak is 2-3 with nine saves and a CAA-leading 2.40 earned run average. He has appeared in 26 games, pitched 41.1 innings, and allowed just 31 hits while striking out 40.
