NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware men's lacrosse All-American Alex Smith, who won his first 23 faceoffs to lead the No. 18 ranked Blue Hens to a 19-4 win over Robert Morris in their regular season finale Saturday, is this week's Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week.
Smith (at right), a senior business marketing major from Timonium, MD (Boy's Latin High School), finished the game winning 23 of 24 faceoffs and scooping up 14 groundballs to lead the Blue Hens (9-5) to their third straight win and a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals.
No. 3 seed Delaware will take on No. 17 ranked and second seed Drexel in a CAA semifinal game this Wednesday, May 2 at 7 p.m. at Vidas Field in Philadelphia. The Hens will be trying to avenge an 11-7 loss to the Dragons on that same field back on April 7.
Smith, the all-time NCAA career leader in faceoffs won and attempted, continues to lead the NCAA in faceoff winning percentage and groundballs. He has won 247 of 327 faceoffs for a 75.5 winning percentage this season and his 133 groundballs (9.5 per game) also leads the country. He also led the nation in faceoff winning percentag in 2005 and 2006.
Smith, a two-time candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy as the national player of the year, was last week's CAA Co-Player of the Week for his performance in Delaware's 12-9 win over Sacred Heart that secured a CAA playoff spot.
