NEWARK, DE -- Senior attackman Vincent Giordano, who helped the Blue Hen men's lacrosse team get the 2008 season off to a strong start Saturday with an 18-10 win over Saint Joseph's, has been named the Wilmington Trust Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 11.
Giordano (at right), a fourth-year standout from Moorestown, NJ (Moorestown High School), tallied a career-high five goals to lead the No. 14 ranked Blue Hens to the easy season-opening win in Philadelphia.
Delaware, coming off the best season in school history in 2007 when the Blue Hens went 13-6, captured the Colonial Athletic Association tournament title, and advanced to the NCAA national semifinals for the first time in school history, got goals from nine different players in the win.
Giordano, a history major, recorded his third career hat track as he fired off a game-high 10 shots. He scored 16 goals and eight assists a year ago and now has 46 career goals.
Delaware will continue action this Saturday when the Blue Hens travel south to Neptune Beach, FL to take on No. 18 UMBC in a rematch of last year's NCAA quarterfinals. The game will mark the inaugural Wounded Warrior Classic benefitting wounded veterans of the war in Iraq.
