Mathematics Education at the University of Delaware is a strongly-supported vibrant program that continues to grow through the shared efforts of faculty, staff, and students in the School of Education, the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and the Mathematics & Science Education Resource Center.
Faculty in mathematics education include Cristina Bacuta, Tonya Bartell, Dawn Berk, Jinfa Cai, Christine Ebert, Alfinio Flores, Brad Glass, Laura Glass, James Hiebert, Mary Ann Huntley, Amanda Jansen, Jon Manon, William Moody (Professor Emeritus), Anne Morris, and Diana Wearne (Professor Emerita). Professional Affiliates and Instructors in mathematics education include Christine Bonis, Thomas Fernsler, Valerie Maxwell, Janice McCarthy, and Crissy Poetzl. Current research and development activities of the faculty include collaborative efforts to study and improve mathematics teacher preparation. Guided by a conceptual framework that emphasizes the gradual but steady improvement of teaching, faculty and doctoral students work together to help pre-service teachers acquire the competencies they need to study and improve their own teaching while, simultaneously, studying and improving their own practice as teacher educators and researchers. Details of the conceptual framework can be found in papers that appeared in Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education (volume 6, issue 3, pages 201-222) and Journal of Teacher Education (volume 58, pages 47-61). In addition to these collaborative efforts, faculty pursue individual research agendas in areas of teacher learning and professional development, mathematical reasoning of children and adults, cross-cultural comparisons of teaching and learning, equity and social justice, classroom discourse, and curricula implementation.
Current research and development activities of the faculty focus on mathematical reasoning and problem solving in children and adults, cross-cultural comparisons of mathematics learning and teaching, and professional development of mathematics teachers. Some of the research being conducted by our group is done collaboratively and is guided by a conceptual framework that focuses on improving teaching and teacher education programs by treating lessons as experiments over an extended period of time.
The University of Delaware is a privately endowed, publicly supported land-grant, sea-grant, space-grant, and urban-grant institution located in Newark, a town of about 30,000 located midway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. With a student population of about 22,000, it offers the best of a graduate research university and a university committed to excellent teaching. The beautiful campus is well-known for its tree-lined walks and colonial architecture, as can be seen on the university's virtual tour. For more information about the University, go to www.udel.edu.
