Interests & Activities (Research):

  • Problem solving and reasoning (e.g., how middle school children reason about descriptive statistics when engaged in inquiry-based learning, how college students make decisions on inferential statistics word problems based on their understanding of the problems and the statistical content that is relevant to solving the word problems, the extent to which students can accurately infer their instructor’s conceptualization of the domain based on the manner in which the course is taught and the extent to which the instructor can accurately infer the manner in which the content is represented by students in different ability levels based on his/her knowledge of capabilities at these levels).

  • Pre-service teachers’ understanding of human development (e.g., how well pre-service teachers understand and apply the notion of “developmentally appropriate practice” for elementary vs. middle school children, how integrated and differentiated is pre-service teachers’ understanding of child and adolescent development) and the effectiveness of instruction in facilitating that understanding (e.g., what instructional supports can facilitate pre-service teachers’ ability to connect human development content to actual practice with children in a field placement experience).
  • Use of technology for facilitating learning and thinking (e.g., in what ways can instructional supports be augmented through technology to enhance students’ ability to solve problems, reason, and make connections).
