In the Cleveland Museum of Art is this historically interesting large six-fold screen of heavy paper, painted color and ink over gold leaf. Ships from Portugal reached Japan in 1542, during a period of Civil War. Soon afterwards, Portuguese Jesuit priests and merchants arrived followed by Spanish Franciscans. Western ships carried Christianity, as well as goods, from both Europe and China to outlying Japanese ports. In this time of the warring Samurai, guns were most desired.  In the ensuing decades the country was unified and Japan occupied Korea .
