The work shows Buddha in meditation before his enlightenment. The ornament is made in three parts and is approximately three feet high.  The cave is decorated with sun, moon, and clouds, and is crowned with a lotus flower. During the Ming period ceramic figures, more commonly animal forms, were placed on roofs to ward off evil spirits.
